lishedin502ADintheLiangDynastyoftheSouthernDynastieswithitsearliestnamebeingtheWonderfulBeneficialUniversalIlluminationPagodaTemple.ItspresentnamewasgivenduringtheTangDynasty(618-907)whentwofamousmonksnamedHanshanandShidecameandstayedinit.Sincethen,BuddhistbelievershavehadthefaithinthefactthesetwomonksarethepersonificationsoftheBodhisattvaofWisdomandtheBodhisattvaofUniversalBenevolencerespectively.Thereforethetemple’snamewaschangedintoHanshanTempleinmemoryofthemonkHanshan.AlsointheTangDynastydidawell-knownpoet,ZhangJibyname,arriveatSuzhouwithhisboatmooringneartheMapleBridgeintheMapleBridgeTown.Aslightbeingsotouching,hecomposedonthespurofmomentapoettodescribeboththesceneryandthebellechoingaroundthetemple.

Nowlet'sgotothestele.Sinceancienttimes,inthetemple,"themaplebridgenightmooring"hasafewpiecesofpoetry.Theansweris:apoem.WangGUI(1019-1085),thekingofthenorthernsongdynasty,wasthefirststoneinthepoemof"themaplebridge",thefirststoneofzhangjishi,whichcouldbelostintheearlyyearsofthismonument.Inordertorestorehistoricalrelicsandcarryforwardthenationalculture,thefirststoneofzhangjishi,whichwasintegratedwithwang'scalligraphy,wasre-establishednexttopumintain1996,withtheeffortsofpeopleonbothsidesoftheTaiwanstraits.ThankstoTaiwanSiNianlibrary,theyfreeget-togetherofgenerousPh.D.Morethan3000wordshandwritingepitaphrubbings,thesuzhoufamouscalligrapherFeiZhiXiongsetword,suzhoumuseumofstoneinscriptionloyaltyasheavycarvedsculptureartists,andshowstheworldthefirststoneZhangJishispirits,tounderstandaget-togetherchirographyprovidesphysicalcharacteristicsandstyle.

Liuhaisu'sworks.Inthewinterof1981,the86-year-oldpainterlockedhimselfinhisroomforaboutfivehours,usingthewholebodyandsoultocompleteamasterpiece--the"maplebridgenight".Whenliufinishedthework,hefellillformanydays,buthewasverysatisfiedwiththeworkandthoughtitwasnolessthanyu'sbook.Accordingtoliu'swish,thistabletwasengravedin1994andplacedinthecorridorofhanshantemple.
